One of our grassroots manager from our state’s Cancer Action Network team reached out to our group via Facebook to let us know that the 49ers were reaching out to 80 people who were survivors or actively fighting cancer. These invitations were part of the NFL #CrucialCatch and this notification were for those involved in advocacy for the American Cancer Society. Immediately I wanted to reach out and see if we can get my mom involved. She doesn’t know football nor would she really care but I thought it be a nice gesture to allow herself to see that she is being featured on live television that’ll be broadcasted to thousands of American homes. The grassroots manager sent out an e-mail giving us more directions and I was able to submit an application. It was approved!
When game day came on Sunday, October 4th at 5:20pm – my mom was featured along with many others who were actively fighting cancer or survived it. My mom was at the hospital when she saw this and it gave her joy amidst the grim news we’ve recently heard regarding her fight with cancer. As some of you may have already heard, the cancer has progressed and is actively growing once again. After an year fight with targeted therapy, the oncologist recommended we switch my mom on another treatment that includes the newly researched immunotherapy. More details will be given later this month. For my mom to receive even the slightest news such as the fact that she is being featured as a “cardboard fan” at a NFL football game, it brought her so much joy.
49ers lost to the Eagles that night, but we really don’t care about that lol (this family is a Chargers fan).
